Pilates is an exercise system designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, posture, and mental focus.

The method was developed in the early 1900s by German born, Joseph Pilates, who believed that improved physical health and fitness increase human contentment.

Pilates exercises are done on a mat or using special equipment, such as the Reformer, Cadillac and Wunda Chair.

Pilates can be many things to many people.  Some of its benefits include developing improved:

  • strength and flexibility

  • muscle balance

  • core strength

  • concentration

  • alignment and posture

  • body awareness

  • efficient movement patterns

In addition to this, Pilates can be a great tool for people recovering from injury or surgery, as well as beneficial to women in any stage of pregnancy. It is also excellent for reducing stress and aiding relaxation.

About Pilates

Established by Matthew Atwell in early 2015, The Pilates Education provides group and individual, mat and equipment Pilates classes for people in South London.  Offering a unique blend of training and practice, we aspire to empower people in effectively exploring the Pilates method.

Our mission is, "to promote, through Pilates, the wellbeing and health of people in our locality”.  We believe that Pilates is for everyone and that, with the right teaching methods, all people can grasp the potential behind each movement, bringing life and strength back into the body and mind.

To this end, we aim to:

  • provide an authentic Pilates experience

  • employ effective teaching methods that support individual needs

  • safely challenge people to grow beyond their current level of practice

  • promote the mind-body connection which enhances more effective practice

  • deliver training courses which enable safe progression through the repertoire

  • develop access opportunities allowing many different people to learn more about Pilates

Core to Joseph Pilates' ethos was a sense of equipping his students with the skills and knowledge required to become more independent in the method.  As with all education, the good that you learn cannot be taken from you.  Rather, it shapes who you become and contributes to why you live as you do.  This goal of independence is central to the teaching philosophy of The Pilates Education.

For this reason, all new students begin their journey with us by attending our Mat Pilates Foundations Course which can be done in groups or individually. This is an induction to the work of The Pilates Education and ensures that each student is known and fully supported in their journey with us.

About The Pilates Education

About Matthew

Matthew first encountered Pilates at 15, as part of his training in classical ballet, where he explored vital movement principles that accompanied him in his career whilst performing in musicals.  Further integrating these concepts, Matthew went on to teach dance and performing arts in a variety of educational establishments, the last of which included his role as Assistant Director of Musical Theatre at The BRIT School in Croydon.

On completing his comprehensive Pilates teacher training with BASI Pilates, Matthew left The BRIT School and established The Plates Education in early 2015.

An articulate communicator; Matthew’s effectiveness may be measured by his unique ability to connect with and accompany his students in their developmental journey.

Dedicated to an holistic approach to health and wellbeing, Matthew is committed to his own Pilates process through continued research, training and practice.  Once a student, always a student!  After all, it is this investment that ensures others can experience the best outcome from integrating Pilates into their own lives.
